Congrats! We have an '80 with a short rig and she sails beautifully. I've let go of the wheel in 15 kts and she sailed a straight line as if on auto pilot (perfectly trimmed obviously).
Ours had been updated with a longer boom, a Yanmar 56hp engine, new Foss foam rudder, radar and chart plotter. Our was custom built for Jim Hunt and has a 6' draft and all opening ports.
Here we are racing in the Governors' Cup on the Chesapeake Bay.
Enjoy!

Hello everyone,
I have an accepted offer on an immaculate, refit Cal 39 Mark II (58ft mast, so I assume a tall rig as well). Survey and sea trials this week.
Welcome any general input on sailing qualities and what I should look for in the survey.
She has had her running rigging replaced within the last 5 or so years, re-fit wiring, updated electronics, new interior, solar, windvane, water maker, engine maintenance, etc...
I'll be specifically curious about any softness in the decks; the rudder bearing and cutlass bearing; and the overall condition of the Perkins 4108 w/ no hour meter (taking fuel samples).
She is rigged w/ running backstays, which I've never used before.
I hear that Cal 39 owners love her sailing abilities, but have never sailed one myself. I think a Cal 39 Mark II w/ a Tall Rig has a PHRF of 108, which ain't too shabby.
At any rate... we're excited. Welcome general comments/pointers on new ownership of a Cal 39.
