Randy a lot of boats the 2 haves came part to get the hull out of the mold but were glassed with both halves together. Hi, All. Any Cal I’ve heard of (from the old days – 60s/70s) were one piece in the mold. For sure on the embedded keels that were dropped into the mold (not bolt on – do not know if later Cals were bolt-on). Not sure on the 48, an older boat. A lot of J/Boats (if not all?) are seamed down the middle of the keel. I believe they are balsa cored in the hull. I’ve heard of a few cases of cracking problems on that center seam in those boats. My '80 Cal 39 was built that way. Two halves glassed together in the center. I was told all the structural glass was done inside and they the seam on the outside afterwards. filled in afterwards. Not at home now but I have pics of it where I had to repair the bow where the owner had hit something which confirmed what the surveyor, who was also a naval architect, told me. I think it's because of hull shape--no tumblehome, but a cove stripe molded in. No issues with the joining in 57 years or sailing. Chris Campbell > >
