Cal 2-27 transom with oily smudges

Checking in with you on this. I have only owned this boat with a Farymann A 30 for a season. Water pump has a new impeller and plenty of water is flowing through it. However I am finding an ever growing dark patch of discoloration on the transom,...making me wonder about what's passing through the motor and of the exhaust. When the engine is running there is no unusual smoke, nothing to tell me oily stuff will be accumulating outside the boat. Any of you folks have an opinion on what's happening here? -- *Donald J Thomas* Broker Associate *LIV Sotheby's International Realty* 101 S. May be blowby, try oil change and 50 weight, also maybe tune the injector. I saw this on the transom of another farymann powered cal, the owner ultimately replaced with a different diesel. My Cal 33-2 with Yanmar 3GM30F after a lot of motoring would start to get some black on the transom. Engine didn't smoke underway that I could see. I just made sure to run it hard and also I found that I was idling too much. Diesels want to be run under load. After letting your engine cool down idling after a long motor, rev the engine say about five times to blow out the carbon before shutting down. What Yanmar recommends is just that. I take mine from idle right up to 3k RPM, then to idle. Sort of quick. Do that five times and then idle back down a few seconds and shut the engine off. Hopefully blowing out the carbon. And I washed the transom :). Also, If the engine isn't using any oil to speak of it could be overloaded say due to prop pitch. You never know if for sure the prop is correct for that boat. You might want to check which prop you have and then get advice on that as well. Overloaded diesel will have black smoke. Thanks for that. Will give them a try. Oil just changed before I cranked it first time. Heavier grade, then injector.
