Doesn't Tom Vandiver live down there? Like you, I hope all are taking care to do what they need to do to be safe and get outta harm's way!

Yes, Paul. I believe Tom and Bobbi Vandiver are in Bayou Chico, just west of Pensacola. Here’s hoping.

Yes, Tom Vandiver lives on the panhandle, but he is over near Pensacola... about 90 miles west of Panama City. I think Tom will be OK.

I was in training to be a Naval Flight Officer, and was based at Pensacola Naval Air Station when Hurricane Camile came thru, skirting the shore 50 miles away heading west, then struck Biloxi Mississippi, flattening it. Of course, we were out body surfing the day before and the day after it hit (nearly broke my neck-the waves were steep, short, and bonked me head first into the sand. And the waves were breaking for 1/4 mile before the shoreline), and I went out riding my motorcycle in it the night it hit., 'cause I always wanted to see what a hurricane was like. Camille was a category 5, with sustained winds of 190 MPH with gusts of 212. I saw Biloxi a few months later. It looked like it had been hit by a hydrogen bomb (the destruction covered a large area). One multi lane concrete highway bridge had been uprooted and destroyed. Ships were on the beach, and houses were reduced to 'pick-up-sticks'. I could tell you more the stories of what happened to people that stayed are pretty ugly. One twister came off the hurricane and tore the roof off one of our pool buildings. I guess I was lucky.

Thanks to y'all for your concern. We are okay, as is Satori our Cal 46. Later I will post pictures of her slip at our dock and how we have prepared. Since returning here in 1995, we have had several hurricanes, with Ivan in 2004 as the worst. We had finished our new home in March 2004. We built to the most stringent building code in Florida, Miami-Dade, so no damage. I rode it out aboard Satori. Now that was an experience. After serving in the Marine Corps, I enjoyed 30 years as a Fire Fighter in Southern California, so I have experience with emergencies.
More later. We are exhausted after 3 days of hard labor for this 80 year old preparing, getting the 22' Panga and 25 FG 'toon on their trailers, adding lines, setting anchors, getting loose stuff inside or secured and spending hours on line with Weather Underground which is IMHO our best source of weather news.
It appears we are safe, forecast up to 50 knots of wind from the N E', which is offshore :-) and rain. We will probably loose power soon, so I must get our diesel powered generator ready. It will only handle the 2 refrigerators, so the beer will be cold. We will be off line for a while until I get the cell phone connex, but that assumes the cell towers don't blow down.
Times like this makes us wonder why we ever left Long Beach, CA?
