River trip
david dobbs2016-10-25 21:15 UTC
Did the haulout trip today, 6 miles on a very lumpy Lake Mich, then smooth water for nine miles down the Calumet. Had to wait 20 minutes for a barge to clear the 1000- foot lock, then 20 more minuets to the yard. Guys were waiting for me, I drove the boat into the slings and we got off, and the season is over. Going down to the harbor on Thursday to put the mast on the rack. I have the yard guys winterize the engine, they guarantee their work! I have a few fall projects that need doing, weather permitting.David Dobbs CAL29 411

My boat is in it's slip. This time an uneventful trip. The A-4 hummed along nicely at 8 knots. The lock was easy also, called the lockmaster on channel 16, he said 10 minutes, was more like 20, but it's better than 2 hours. After the lock it was mostly clear. We had to get behind 2 sets of barges who were outbound and that slowed us a little, (not enough room to pass in that part of the river.). On the open lake 8 knots again and we were there in 45 minutes. It's good to be back on the water! Even under power!David Dobbs Cal29 411

Hi, David. I know you’ve named it before, but what river is it that you use to get from yard to slip? Are you still docked at Jackson Park?

Charlie, it's the Little Calumet River. It used to flow into the lake back in the 1800s, but when they reversed the Chicago River they also reversed the Little Calumet, hence the need for a lock. A 1000 foot lock. We only saw barges this trip but sometimes a saltie. It's dredged to 30 feet bank to bank, well, sheetpile to sheetpile. Working river. It's where shipping comes and goes. The Chicago River has become almost entirely recreational. They used to ship newsprint to the 4 daily papers that had printing plants on the river, but we're down to 2 and the Trib actually prints the Sun-Times. Don't know how they get the newsprint now. The bridges on the Chicago River can all be opened, they are bascule. In the spring and fall the city opens them for sailboats on Wednesday and Saturday on a published schedule, but most of the mast-up storage people have gone to Crowley's on the Little Calumet. Only 2 bridges to the lake from there and those are manned 24/7 because of commercial traffic. Did you know that Pittsburgh has the most bridges of any city, at least in the US? David

I probably saw David's boat from the air. The flight from TC to Chicago
O'Hare went right over shoreline marinas N. of downtown. And then when
flying back into TC on Friday evening, I could see my little Cal 20
floating on her mooring. The world looks so much different from the
air. My brother was trying to figure out where we were when we crossed
Lake Huron at 37,000 feet on the return from Edinburgh to Chicago. I
didn't have a window seat on that flight so I just got a few glimpses.

Left the harbor at 11:30am, got to the yard at 3:30pm. That includes going through a lock, so not bad. One of my sailing friends waited 2&1/2 hours early this afternoon. Barge traffic goes first. We only waited 15 minutes today. I still have some cleanup to do, but it's on the hard. Now comes the time to ponder improvements, like a new engine control panel, with a tach added. Any suggestions?David Dobbs Cal29 411.
