Sheaves for Helen - was Free Stuff

Jeff, I found this out a few years back when looking for some piece for my old model Cal 25. They make their own parts. If they get an order some old thing, it waits in line behind other stuff they are making in higher quantities. Still, it is worth a shot. Helen, I have a guy in Annapolis who was/is making sheave sets for me for Cal 25s. The part sizing is a bit odd. I just took in the old parts. Place is a funky little joint, and the owner is a good drummer (an aside). Results were excellent. Hard phenolic with oilite bearings sized and grooved just so. Not cheap, but good. Up here in Port Townsend we have a guy that makes sheaves to order. Zephywerks at https://www.zephyrwerks.com/sheaves.html Very high quality with silicon bronze bushings. I can attest to his care and speed of manufacture as a rigger at Brion Toss yaght riggers they are the only ones we order from when replacing sheaves. Julia “Squire” Cal 2-29

Helen, You might take a look at https://www.zephyrwerks.com/sheaves.html Ed is a good guy and as ‘quirky’ as any of us are up here in Port Townsend, but he makes the best sheaves. All you need is a caliper gauge to find the ideal size for the new one and send him the dementions. I’ve worked with him a lot as I am a rigger with Brion Toss Yaght Riggers here in PT he is the only one we order from for fast reliable service. Fair leads, Julia Squire cal 2-29

I replaced sheaves and axles this spring on Arcturus, our Cal 2-27, and the first time out I burned my palm on the halyard. The difference between the not-turning, or barely turning phenolic sheaves and sheaves with bearings was amazing! Hoisting sails was so easy, and I have to wear gloves when dropping. I expect they will outlast me. I had two sets of sheaves made by Zephyrwerks... a total of nine if I recall. All were perfect.
