Group, I recently acquired a Cal20, and was wondering if the peeling interior was gelcoat or paint. The interior is original and the boat has had no modifications. George

This question has come up several times over the years and I think the consensus was never reached. Whatever the stuff is what is loose comes off easy and what is stuck remains stuck until it is sanded or scraped off. The good news is you only have to remove it once. Standard house paint or Brightsides one part polyurethane has been applied successfully. I prefer Brightsides. My Cal 20 had the peeling disease. Where it wanted to let loose, it peeled. Where it didn't want to, it was tenacious as hell. I wanted to paint but did not want to just paint over that crud and have it peel off next week. I do not know what it is, but the only thing that removed it was the strongest version of Zip-Strip. It worked. Then I had the local hardware store match a sample of the original stuff, tinting some interior paint from Pettit so it was the original beige color (used to be called Dura-White or something like that; since renamed). I still have some of the original stuff in the seat locker and on the underside of the seats. It annoys me by leaving chunks of itself as it peels. But I'm not about to crawl way aft with Zip-strip in the air. Chris Campbell

In my Cal 2-25, I performed the unenviable task of removing the hull liner carpet. A dusty and sometimes musty process. Underneath was bare fiberglass and glue vestiges. Instead of painting, replaced with marine vinyl attached to reflectix by way of spray adhesive. It was relatively inexpensive and looks nice - an alternative to repainting that also insulates the hull somewhat.
