Chartplotters
Bruce Boyles2019-01-06 03:01 UTC
I am in the market for a chartplotter for my Cal 2-27. Anybody got a recommendation for one? Also where would you recommend I mount the transducer? Is it necessary to mount the transducer thru-hull or are there models that I can mount on the inside of the hull?
Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce,
I have always been happy with Garmin chart plotters. Very reliable. User
friendly. Their maps have served me well. I just installed a 942sx in my
Ericson 380. Also the 18" radar dome. I did not install any thru hull as I
was not installing any sonar at the time. Thinking of adding that now. I
Also installed a Vesper XB8000 AIS transponder. That is on the NMEA 2000
bus along with the 942xs and a Raymarine EV 100 wheel pilot. The electronic
compass of the autopilot feeds heading data onto the bus which the 942xs
uses to keep the radar aligned. This all went in early 2018 and served me
well all last season.
Just FYI, chart plotters are fairly easy to install. Mostly just need power
if they are stand alone. When we bought our Cal some years ago I swung by
West Marine, bought a Garmin 741. We wanted to hurry up and get underway
and we were going to be late arriving at our destination. So I ran a wire
from the panel out into the cockpit and got the Garmin powered up, just
laid it on a cockpit cushion. It didn't need any antenna. Got us into
Onnancock without incident.

Bruce,
I second what Leslie said about Garmin chart plotters. But I have another idea that has served me well.
Before I went cruising off to México, I purchased an iPad with the gps chip. (This is the one that also can be used with cellular service, but I did not sign up.) I have found this to be my “go to” device, as my radar / chart plotter is below at the nav station. It is portable and connects with my AIS via WiFi. I can “mount it” by inserting the flap of it’s case under the hatch cover.
This summer, when I returned to the Northwest, I used it on my Cal 29 in the San Juans and Gulf Islands. It went back with me in the fall to México.
This is a great back-up. I like redundancy and have a Garmin handheld as well that has never been used.

I have a Lowrance chartplotter, depth, fish finder unit.
I mounted the transducer on the inside of the hull as the manual said using the recommended epoxy in the manual. Sand the hull smooth, work the epoxy so there's no bubbles, wiggle the transducer into it, and let it dry. Works like a charm. Sees the bottom, fish, weeds, mud, rocks, logs, water temp as if it were hung over the side. Can't say if the plotter is as good as the rest, but it has gotten me along the coast a few times.
But I can say you can definitely mount the transducer on the inside IF it is meant to be.

Terry,
I hear you on the tablet. I too use a tablet. A Galaxy Tab A. But it is my
backup. It can mirror the 942 screen and I also have isailor installed.
I've been sailing more than 30 years and for me when I really need
electronic guidance is when the shit has hit the fan so to speak. Any other
time you can really get by with paper charts. And when everything goes to
crap I want my chart plotter in front of my face and both hands free.
Something that was designed solely to perform navigation. I read an article
were someone trusted their iPad enough to allow it to run them aground when
it glitched.
If you're on a budget and you already have a tablet then go for it.
Personal preference of course. But again I think it wise to use equipment
that is designed for the job.
I researched a lot of brands. From all my digging it seems Lowrance gets
poor marks on customer service. Actually Navico owns Lowrance, Simead and
B&G. So buying any of those is from the same place so to speak.
Raymarine is kind of known for unfriendly user interfaces. My Ericson had
an old C80 which I did not find intuitive.
Hope Bruce can successfully weed through all his choices. There are many
ways to go.

Hi Bruce,
I have an old Samsung tablet, (much cheaper than an IPAD) onto which I
downloaded Navionics and then paired the "bad elf" to the Navionics
program. You can get the bad elf from Amazon for about $100 and the
annual fee on the Navionics is quite reasonable too. I sailed all around
the San Juans with it last summer and it was great!. You don't have to
wire anything in, you're running off satellite so there's no issue
regardless of where you go, both devices run a long time before needing
to be charged and charge quickly on the inverter while you're motoring.
It gives you all the information any chart plotter does and the tablet
easily goes where you need it to be.
It's a really efficient, effective way to go for not a lot of money and
its simplicity means less problems or potential issues.
Happy Sailing,

It's a 7 something. It's about4 years old so I know it's been replaced by a newer model.
I will get the numbers tomorrow when I go to the boat. And hopefully do some sailing. I need it.

The Lowrance model I have is an Elite 7 HDI.
It can use the HDI 50/200khz or HDI 83/200khz transducer. Don't know which I have. Can't see the number where it sits, which is the same spot the original transducer shot through the hull but gave depth only. Either transducer is made to shoot through the hull. I'm sure there are others out there, but this works great. I've see bottom at 200ft using through hull with it.
