I am trying to locate a Cal 46, hull #14. The last I had contact with
her she was named Shankara and berthed in Jacksonville, FL. If you
know how to contact the present owners, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi everyone,
I am a charter captain on an old Cal 46 and we have encountered some regulations that require us to provide stability information for the vessel. It makes it difficult as the boat has not been in production for 30 years.
Does anyone have in there possession or know where to find any of the CE stability calculations for the vessel? e.i stability curve, STIX tables, original placard with rating for the boat, or even the 'Line Diagrams' from the naval architect so we can create a computer model of the vessel digitally. ANY INFORMATION would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Mark

Here is a link to the Cal 2-46 owners manual. One of the guys on this list is Tom Vandiver who owned a Cal 46 forever and just sold it or has it for sale. He may chime in later when he sees your post. Google is your friend if this link doesn't help.

There was a rating book published that my mast builder had a copy of that
had stability numbers. I am not sure that would help much as it is just a
single number and you can measure it with a good level by shifting weight
from one side of the boat to the other and comparing the readings. I can
only say that such a book existed but I do not know the title or how to get
it. I can dig if you think it would help.

Hi Cal Pals,
I have communicated with Mark re: Cal 46 plans from Bill Lapworth. I have them SOMEWHERE??I will send them, when I find them.
This month I have had SATORI 35 years. She was first launched in Newport Beach, November 1967, so this November she will be 50 years young. As many of you know, Jack Jensen, the founder of Cal Boats, Jensen Marine built her for himself, sold the company and sailed her around the world returning to Newport Beach very ill with a blood disease. He passed at the early age of 53. We bought the boat from his estate.
She is overbuilt, 1 5/8" thick hull, +++. I met one of the former workers at Jensen Marine who worked on SATORI and told me she had three more barrels of resin, 165 gallons, than the other Cal Cruising 46's. There were 18 Cruising 46's built, then a bunch of the Cal 2-46's and 3-46's.
We lived aboard and cruised from 1988 to 2007, when I had some health issues that preclude any more cruising. Hoping that I would be able to conquer my health challenges, I held on to SATORI. Next year I will be 80 and still have total vestibular dysfunction, so I must sell her. I have a master boat worker on her full time doing cosmetic repairs, inside and out. All mechanical functions are well done as she is at my dock, less than 100' from my house.
When the cosmetics are finished, she will go on the market, "AS IS" or with new electronics as desired by the new owner. I have a Florida business, BSH Marine LLC, primarily rebuilding Perkins engines, but doing all boat work, so I can source parts at fair prices.
There are two Cal 46's recently on the market, one in Hawaii and one in Seattle, asking $100,000.In case anyone is interested, contact me off the list for details, pictures, etc.

Hey Everyone, Hey Tom!
Thanks for chiming in on this subject. Those that have been on and sailed these boats know the level of stability and keel vs total weight distribution. There is what they call a simplified measurement that I have done with a inclinometer...however this is only serving as a temporary test in Transport Canada's eyes. Hey Tom, if you have any updates my email is still ma… [at] hotmail.com.
Happy sailing everyone....we are still thawing out up here.

Hi, All. Some years back (about 15 Tom?), a lady friend and I and my Cal 25 Chicken Little had the good fortune to meet Tom and Bobbi and Satori in Annapolis when they were touring the East Coast. I do have some decent and so-so photos of inside and outside Satori. Tom, I could forward them to you for your censorship/approval. Drive from inside or outside.
It is said that Bill Lapworth designed purpose boats. The purpose of the 46 was cruising far and wide. Large and comfy living space. Engine room big enough to put in a machine shop.
When Bill and Peggy Lapworth attended a Cal 25 group luncheon in Annapolis circa 1994 (boy was I surprised when he accepted the invitation), they were on their way from Reedville, VA to tour the Great Lakes. What was their boat of choice? A Cal 46. When asked what his favorite Cal model was, he said “whichever one I am sailing”.
Take Care

I will send them, when I find them.
We lived aboard and cruised from 1988 to 2007, when I had some! health issues that preclude any more cruising.
There are two Cal 46's recently on the market, one in Hawaii and one in Seattle, asking $100,000.
In case anyone is interested, contact me off the list for details, pictures, etc.

I don't know about anybody else but I would love to see pictures of this
classic. Please post them when you find them and thank you.

I do have some decent and so-so photos of inside and outside Satori. Tom, I could forward them to you for your censorship/approval. Drive from inside or outside.

What was their boat of choice? A Cal 46. When asked what his favorite Cal model was, he said "whichever one I am sailing".

BTW, I rode out Ivan, with 140 knots wind on board SATORI. Minor damage, 140 knots is noisy, but I had to adjust lines as the storm surge was over 10' above mean high tide.

ANY INFORMATION would be greatly appreciated.
