Need 1980's Horizon Depth/Speed Display...
David Field2019-02-22 19:51 UTC
Does a anyone know of an old Horizon Depth/Speed display unit laying around that needs a good home? The attached unit still works, but as you can see Mr. Sun has rendered it extremely hard to read. Sending unit is functioning normally. Happy to pay reasonable cost. Thanks!DavidCal 27 Mark IIIPunta Gorda, Floridae-mail: fi… [at] gmail.com

Gosh. When you said "horizon" right away I'm thinking..um..artificial horizon..turn and bank indicator? And yes. Airspeed airspeed. Airspeed is your friend. And so many many many of us sailors are oblivious to angle of attack. Why angle of attack isn't taught in ASA 101 or "how to sail" books is totally beyond me. Stall, crash, burn and die with excessive angle of attack. Well, we don't fall out of the sky, crash burn and die like you will with an aircraft, but you will stop moving forward, loose rudder authority, and possibly crash into another boat, a piling, or even the boulders of a breakwater which, if you're on the lee side of one could smash your boat to shards of jagged fiberglass, break your bones, and that of your hapless crew, drown you, or, not nearly as bad, but still pretty bad- get you caught in rollers and wash your boat up on a beach rendering it a total loss. And god forbid you damage a reef, ruin a whole lot of fishes homes, and end up on the hook for tens of thousands of dollars in fines, and throw shame upon the entire sport of sailing when you are caught on someone's smart phone and the whole thing goes viral across the entire planet.
Yes, and this can happen to even an olde experienced sailor. It just takes a few seconds of inattentiveness at the wrong time and place.

Yikes! I have never been so scared in all my life as when I read one of your emails…..;-)
Yes, I was taught about angle of attack, if you are meaning the perfect angle that your wing / sail points into the wind to get the most efficient use of the airfoil. I expect others were too. But ti is a worthwhile concept when you think about making your boat go most efficiently.

I looked up Horizon Instruments Inc, in Placentia, So Cal, 800 #. Try them. We had our original Signet instruments repaired by Signet guys (different shop probably). Helen cal 2-27, 36, and now 39 too.
