Cal 2-27 mast gooseneck attachment

The photo is of what I suspect is the original equipment mast strap that the gooseneck attaches to the mast. The crack didn't get any larger or longer last season. From the looks of the strap, it's aluminum. It also looks to me that the crack is at a high stress point because of the 90 degree bend and the bend at the mast in another access. I have a machine shop quote for about $100 per strap from 6061 (there are two, one top and bottom). I've considered replacing the gooseneck altogether, but it's pricey. One last thought is using the local maker space CNC mill and learning a new skill. Opinions from the Cal List? Harold Beer Cal 2-27 #189 Arcturus Muskegon, MI

Harold, that’s just like the one on my CAL34. I’ll keep an eye on it. What’s to lose in learning to fabricate it on the CNC at the community shop? It’s not a terribly complex piece and there’s probably someone around with some experience operating it. I encourage you to give that a try. > On Mar 2, 2019, at 3:34 PM, ha… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > The photo is of what I suspect is the original equipment mast strap that the gooseneck attaches to the mast. > > The crack didn't get any larger or longer last season. > > > > From the looks of the strap, it's aluminum. Get good enough, you might make some money selling to this market. Laugh, but just a little. Where else will we go when our time comes? That’s not aluminum. Probably 3xx series stainless.
