Nice boat! Yes there is a plug. Mine has a plug that makes the hull a smooth surface and a separate wood door that goes on the inside of the cockpit. Seals Spars sells both these parts. Im sure if your handy you could make something as well...

Looks like yours has been modernized--looks like the forestay
"chainplate" device has been tied to a plate farther down the stem, the
forward lower shrouds removed, an aftermarket forward hatch installed,
and (this one puzzzles me) the forward mooring cleats removed.

Yes this one is a 1965 and I don't understand why there's not a cleat on the boat fore or aft
Here's some photos of my 1964 Cal 20

The forward lower shrouds are often removed for racing (reduced windage, mast bend, and weight aloft). The forward cleats are sometimes removed or replaced with rings because the jib tends to hang up on them and tear or wear out. I think a better solution for the jib is to put a 4 inch fair-lead on it to raise it a couple inches off the deck. Racers have different opinions about doing this modification. The halyard cleats on the mast are often removed also because the jib sheets hang up on them.

These boats are all veterans now, and it is interesting to see (1) how
Jensen Marine used different hardware at different times, and (2) how
people have modified the boats over the years. The photos make me want
to go sailing!
Last night I started on this year's fitting-out by painting the other
boat's outboard propeller. The outboard on that boat is in a well, too,
and the prop likes to corrode. Lately I have been using Pettit's
Rustlok primer, intended for ferrous metals. I apply it by "wet
sanding" it onto the cleaned-up bare aluminum with a wire brush. The
Rustlok is a very tenacious urethane based paint. I have some on my
hands that will be there until the skin flakes off. I started this a
couple years ago and the amount of corrosion has decreased notably.
The next project, starting tonight probably, is sanding and varnishing
the Cal 20's mahogany tiller. No major Cal 20 projects this year,
beyond the new Porta-Potti that i just ordered. The old one was a ca.
1970 model that had been removed from service on the other boat and then
patched to serve on the Cal. It's nice to have a toilet aboard for
ladies. It's not nice to have a leaking toilet aboard. By last fall,
I'd see leakage and traced it to the head. Not good. I ordered up the
smallest Thetford model.
