Sorry your boat didn't sell on eBay, do you mind if I ask what the reserve amount was?

Seems like a boat would sell better on Craigslist. eBay is better for
things you can put in the mail. If you don't need national reach, sell
local. Cheaper too.

Re: [Cal_Boats] eBay listing
ccampbell2019-03-15 16:50 UTC
This reminds us of the difference between inherent value and market
value. Market value is what willing seller and a willing buyer agree
on. The buyer and seller must consider the condition of the item and
how functional it is in its current condition, but more importantly,
what another one like it can be bought for.
Inherent value is what it's worth to me. My boats are worth more to me
than to strangers, likely, for a bunch of intangible reasons. I know
how they behave in various conditions. I know what the defects are,
what needs work, and what the strengths are. I know where everything is
and what's aboard and how it works. My other boat has the new-ish
standing rigging, new sails, the cool new bronze centerboard. The Cal
20 is in good shape and I have repaired most of the defects. Most of
all, owning a boat is like owning a dog: they are worth a lot more than
we pay for them. Our boats take us out on the water to relax and to
exercise skills and meet challenges. What's the market value of that?
Not much, but we all pay the price every year in the annual costs of
owning the things and in lost investment returns on the money.
Neither of my boats has much market value. One is 58 years old, the
other 52. The Cal 20 cost me $900 and maybe I could get that now, maybe
not, if I threw in the extra stuff she's fitted out with. The other
boat might or might not bring me $5,000 if the right person came along.
But I'd sell neither if somebody came up and waved the market-value cash
under my nose. Market value is not what they're worth to me. The older
one holds 51 years of memories and experiences for me, the younger one
20 years' worth.
When the time comes to sell, market value will be the starting
criterion. But it's not the only one. Given a choice between selling
to a buyer who's likely to neglect or abuse the boat and offers a high
price, or a buyer who obviously adores the vessel and will be a good
custodian and has less money, I'll take less. That's the person who will
recognize the inherent value in the boats. That's the person who will
enjoy the rewards and challenges of sailing and maybe will pass along
the vessel to another such person when the time comes.
Maybe that's the real benefit of owning old, cheap boats. We can make
decisions that are financially irresponsible.

Re: [Cal_Boats] eBay listing
Allen Edwards2019-03-15 19:07 UTC
My old wood boat is probably worth $1000 if I could find someone to buy
it. There is one listed for sale for $20,000 that someone mistakenly
bought thinking it was worth more because he saw one listed at $68,000. I
know that boat ultimately sold for $1000, not $68,000. But when I was
dismasted I was lucky enough to have a lawyer on my crew that explained the
difference between market value and the value to me as an owner. I showed
three L-36s where the owners had been willing to put $70,000 or more into
them, mine being one of the three. Another rather dramatic story was of
one there the owner hit a buoy and did $70,000 damage and paid to have it
fixed. That was strong evidence of what the boat was worth to him. I make
a strong case to the insurance company of the boat that hit me (I never
filed a claim with my company because I asked for and got more than what it
is insured for) that the boat was worth that. I ultimately got what I
wanted, less than that but more than half that and enough to get me a new
mast from the best mast builder around these parts as well as repairing the
rest of the boat including new bottom paint and assorted repairs. But when
it is time to sell the boat, I know I am screwed.

No, you got the value out of the boat by sailing.
