Boat Yard on Hayden Island, Oregon
Donald Dutton2019-05-01 16:43 UTC
I seem to remember one of our members buying a boat yard on Hayden Island. Does anyone remember the name of the yard? Is that member still lurking? I seem to remember his name as Rod???
Thanks!

Hi, Don. That is Timm Lessley with Danish Marine Services. He apparently lost his leased facility to some other project a couple years ago. He may still have a mobile operation. I do know he had to go back to regular working for a living. Hi Timm.

Thank you all for the help.
Hey Timm Lesley, are you still out there lurking? I am looking for information about Washington marinas as well as boat yards on Hayden Island where I can do some of my own work! (I'll buy you lunch if we can sit and chat!) I want to restore my Cal 33-2 and move it to Washington where I can sail on a bay rather than a river (Columbia.)
Or are there any other Cal listers who have knowledge of good areas to sail my boat in southern Washington State?
This list has always been incredibly helpful and i have even managed to help others myself. Hoping to get some ideas for keeping the boat rather than selling it.
Thanks,
Don Dutton

Hi Don,
I am assuming from your question and the fact that you want to get off the river that you are referring to Puget Sound. If that is correct, there are a bunch of us who could talk with you about sailing and cruising in South Puget Sound. Or further north as the inland waterways extend to Alaska. There are also cruising guides available that have loads of information about marinas and places to go. And I can think of one boatyard in Tacoma that allows people to work on their own boats, There may be others.
I recommend Puget Sound south of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge as a great place to spend some time on a boat.

Hey Don,
Nemesis and I have spent the past 25 years messing around on the Sound. My thoughts are free, and well worth the price. I’m in complete agreement with Terry about the value of the South Sound. Tacoma and Olympia have lots of moorage, including a vacant slip at TYC between Nemesis and Capriccio. 48 Degrees often runs destination articles, but maybe the best way to check it out is to come on up and have a lot around.

Don, Edward and I had the fantastic priviledge of sailing Nemesis throughout the Sound. In 2014. There are so many destinations to spend days visiting, my favorites were Port Townsend, and Friday harbor. We had a great 2 days racing with Fred...we did so well they upped his handicap and took away our first days wins. Fred has cruised most all of those waters as far as I know, even up to Desolation sound. Tacoma YC is a welcoming club, and has good food. If you are a member of a yacht club (we belonged to 2 in SF bay) you can additionally get reciprocals from quite a few clubs which actually let you have a free night or two, or discounted. You could spend all summer and still not see everything.Try staying at Fishermans Terminal up through the locks, and find restaurants in Ballard, Seattle, and the terminal. We spent two nights in Bell Harbor. Check out the arts and sculptures. We'll be forever grateful to Fred and Sandy. Olympia has quite a few nice marinas and quite a wacky but enjoyable culture to boot.
