Brian - I have an '80 Cal 39 MK III as well and will be at the boat tomorrow and will take a look at mine. The one time I needed mine I had left it at home to save weight for the Governors Cup race from Annapolis to St. Marys. We were under spinnaker on the way home and one of the sheaves came off of my steering down below (which is another story). I was able to turn to port but not starboard and when I pulled the propane locker out I was able to see the steering quadrant and could actually stand on it and steer a bit LOL. Fortunately we were close enough to Oxford we were able to call a buddy with a powerboat to tow us in. It took me all of 20 min to fix the steering the next day and we were able to sail home to Cambridge. Paul WestAdventure Kwest My favorite pic of our boat. In going through the gear on board I found what appears to be the emergency tiller. Unfortunately the fitting over the rudder post into which the tiller appears to insert is missing a pin. ( see attached photos). Is anyone familiar with this setup? I have been unable to locate the pin which is about 1/2 inch in diameter and inserts into the two holes in the fitting. I am going to try and fabricate a replacement from a 1/2" steel rod bought at Lowes and cutting it to size with a hacksaw blade but I am not sure if this will work. Any input or experience regarding the emergency tiller or the particular fitting would be greatly appreciated.
