Fuel linkages 4108
Edward Stancil2019-06-21 03:50 UTC
Hi guys have trouble with
Keeping rpms up
Now engine starts
And when MOVE fuel control lever on binnacle
Engine revs up. Then
Idles but down to idles.
Feel disconnected
And Not Positive as
I would like it ..
1979 Cal 39
4108 Perkins Diesel
So once again ..
Start eng..
Throttle on up position
Engine increases rpms
Then eng slowly drops
Back to idle...eventhough
Is in full position..
Thanks Edward Stancil

Check the simple stuff first. Sounds like it could be fuel starvation, but fuel not totally blocked. Replace fuel filter(s), looking at old filters when removed checking for signs of excess contamination. If filters are gunked up and that fixes problem, consider cleaning fuel tank.

Having rebuilt over 200 Perkins 4.108's in the last five years, I suggest:1- Disconnect cable for throttle. Hold lever about 1/4 position while someone you trust starts the engine. When she starts return lever to idle for one minute. Then rev it to desired RPM's If all okay replace and/or adjust the cable to the binnacle.
2-If cable linkage is okay, start at the fuel tank examining fittings and hose. Replace all fuel water separators and filters, being careful to bleed properly. Run the engine to test.
3-How old is your fuel? When is the last time you had the fuel polished and the tank(s) cleaned? Have some firm pump the fuel out through a water separator/filter, clean the tanks and add cetane booster to old fuel. Try to keep you fuel tanks full to minimize the air space in the tank. Daytime heat expands the air and it escapes the tank, evening cool draws moisture laden air into the tank, it condenses and the water goes to the bottom of the tank.
4-Have your fuel injectors tested, cleaned and calibrated, Take you F.I. high pressure pump to a competent firm and have it tested and repaired as needed. We use Atmore Fuel Injection in Atmore, AL. Be sure to mark timing before removing the pump.
Hope this helps,

Check your fuel filter would be where I would start......I used to have a Cal 39 with a Perkins 4-108.....Amazing Grace

Fuel filter and raycore.
Disassembled wiped
Clean filled bled system
Engine stated..
(Before Engine cranked
But would keep going)
Injection pump is hidden
And cannot get a view..
Throttle is hookup
Backwards so back
Is power.. Forward is off.
But Tom is this a fuel
Starvation problem ?
It feels like linkage
Is slideing between lever
(on binnacle) and injection
Pump .. when throttled
Up then rpms increase
But slowly engine goes
Back to ldle ..
Moving throttle back to
Idle

Control back to idle then
Forward..
And slowly rpms increase
Eachtime then decrease
But lever still at full on

Then try like was suggested. Bypass the linkage and work the fuel lever directly by hand.
Easy stuff first.

If you keep your hand on the lever do the rpm’s stay level?
On my Cal 2-46, I replaced the throttle cable. I opted not to do the screw thing that would keep tension on the cable so it would stay where the throttle lever was placed on the binnacle. I didn’t want the possible moisture/corrosion entry point. So, our throttle will only stay up to about 1250 rpm - if I push it higher, it slides back down. We use a headband from my wife to keep pressure on the lever so it stays where we want it. I believe you can also get a different lever system at the binnacle that will lock it where you want it.
Cheers,
Kevin Baerg
