Greets May be on the water again with a Cal30-3 that needs chain plates repaired and a new beam. Last I recall the beam was simple if done from the head side but clueless on the chainplate repair. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Ch

Chris, Haven’t heard from you for a while. The 3-30 beam sits under the compression post beneath the floor pan at the front of the salon table. When we did Nemesis, we used one of Alan Storey’s museum quality beams, it was not that terrible. You’ll probably want to drop the mast, but might avoid it with some thoughtful bracing. You’ll need to remove at least the port side settee, maybe both. Remove the compression post, the cut off the top of the top of the floor pan beam. The beam is attached to the “harp” that connects to the chain plates with for bolts. Some shimming may be necessary. {ut the top back on the pan with a fiberglass slurry, reinstall the furniture, and you’re golden. The chain plates shouldn’t be too bad. The aft inners are behind the teak boxes in the Salon, and the forward ones are exposed. The aft outers are positioned by teak blocks, and the forwards are in contact with the coach roof. I really should replace mine, which have some oval holes, but I’m just having too much fun sailing. All this is from memory , since I haven’t been aboard since yesterday, and we did the beam least 10 years ago. I’m pretty close, though. Let me know if I can be of assistance. Sean, When my stern pulpit was crushed by my marina neighbor, a local marine metal fabricator (Thomas Marine in San Diego) was able to straighten/repair it. Hi Fred Checked the boat out and too many issues. Classic cal keel wobble, rudder rudder post and beering hone, compression beam gone. Generally messy and dirty.. If anyone needs parts for a cal 3-30 he is going to scrap it now. If there is an interest in parts....just add your email to this thread as I have to teach him how to communicate via email. Nice boat to bad she is so far gone. Later Ch On Mon, Jul 8, 2019, 9:22 PM Fred Haas, <ca… [at] gmail.com> wrote: > Chris, > Haven’t heard from you for a while. Just caught this, doesn't the 3-30 have keel bolts? Wouldn't have same wobble as an encapsulated keel, would it? Did you haul it? Hi again, not the Chris with the cal 20 too, in Michigan? But I see the " crack" , I could be wrong, as the fairing compound used to smooth out bolt on keel to the stub. Check out examples of the Catalina Smile problem. Most other Cals have encapsulated keels. The wag is in the bilge to keel curve, which can sometimes be remedied by beefing up the area under the sole. Our cal29 Noah's Kid. ExIndigo our 2-27 didnt wag, but we did beef our cal 36Caliente just for "drill". All 3 models have the encapsulated keel. Check for keel bolts, the boat might be worth more. Chris, That horizontal “crack” is probably the joint between the keel and the hull. Nemesis had a similar one when she came to the northwest. The yard cleaned, taped and faired it. I am in the sanfrancisco Bay Area. My boat is a sailable project. Aren’t they all. Lol The boy is in good shape with a few soft spots on the deck. The previous owner made a form and poured Gerri cement in the cavity where the beam is under the soil. He said the beam was corroded a little. I will eventually remove and fabricate a new beam. For now it sails and works just fine. A few surveyors said it was u conventional but solid. The item I was most interested in on the 3-30 you have is the dodger. If you are in fact parting it out send me a bunch of pictures of the boat and I will see if I can pick parts from the pictures. > On Jul 15, 2019, at 8:22 AM, Fred Haas ca… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > Chris, > > > That horizontal “crack” is probably the joint between the keel and the hull. Todd, Alan Storey, in Vancouver BC made several 3-30 beams. I don’t believe the 3-30 and the 29 use the same one.He is a sculptor, and his work in 316 is beautiful. He also ripped me a set of Lapworth’s drawings, which a whole ’mother story. I’d do business with him again in a minute. Unless you like, and can get the complete dodger, you’re probably better off having one tabbed. It’ll be expensive, but it’ll be what you want. I know Island dodgers in NYC has measurements for the 3-30, because Nemesis came with one. Not on the same planet with my custom fab, but a bushel cheaper. Fred Haas 3-30 Nemesis- the prettiest girl at the dance!
