Hello All, I am looking to buy a Cal 28-2 (1985-1990 Vintage). I am looking for info on the boat. Are there any known issues that are problems. If anyone is willing to talk to me, send an email with you phone number off line and I will call you. I owned a Catalina 30 until I sold it last year. I sold it because it was physically demanding. I'm 70 years old and am looking at the Cal28-2 being easier to sail. Bert bj… [at] gmail.com

A friend of mine is planning to put a folding prop on his boat. He needs to know the gear ratio but can't get to the boat. He has the standard Westerbeke 13.5 hp engine. If anyone knows what the gear ration is it would be appreciated. John B. CAL 227 #650

I am looking at the original owners manual for my 1988 28-2 which interestingly enough states that the engine is a Westerbeke (which is inaccurate) but the ratio is not stated. I don't know if this is at all beneficial but the gear ratio for my yanmar 2gm20f (original) is hand written inside of the manual as being 2.62 and the prop is a "sailer 1186, 2 blade, 13RH10 on a 1 inch shaft. good luck! He probably has Hurth HBW50 with a 2:1 ratio. That was standard with the model W13 engine. All bets are off if he has a different engine. I have the manual for the engine and there were 5 transmission options. From the pictures shown, I can compare it to ours and narrow it down to 2 of these. It's either the HBW-50 (which another member posted) or the BW-3. Either way, it's either 2:1 or 2.5:1 Wish I saw this sooner as I was at the boat yesterday and could have confirmed. Attached is the transmission page from the manual From: John Boyce <je… [at] gmail.com> To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Sun, February 14, 2010 4:57:02 PM Subject: [Cal_Boats] CAL 28-2 A friend of mine is planning to put a folding prop on his boat. Very jealous of the '88 Cal 28-2 engine, wish we could have found an '88 for sale when we bought ours. 7 more HP could make all the difference. Funny that they didn't update your manual. Like our '87 Cal 33, these boats were designed by Ray Hunt associates (gasp!) and not "real" cal (lapworth) boats. (just kidding, guys) the truth is they too are 23 plus years old and still around to be considered "good old boats". And this is a great list! The knowledge base of this group is amazing. So if you have a question, ask away! We will gladly steer you to the "best" answer available in the cyberworld. I have a '88 28-2 that I keep in Baltimore that was new to me last summer. So far, it has been a wonderful boat that is easy to handle, lacks any serious bad sailing manners, and has been relatively low maintenance. I would imagine that we hear less about the Hunt boats than the Lapworths as the later Cals were exponentially outnumbered by the earlier models though I am not sure exactly how many hulls were produced. I grew up only cruising as opposed to racing so I am slowly putting my toes in the water as it pertains to racing. I am now racing on thursdays with a VERY VERY casual local group and we are faring pretty well against comparable sized boats. I intend on competing in BCYA PHRF non-spin races in the fall. As of now, I am not sure where the local clubs have my PHRF rating. Though little of the information on this list pertains directly to my boat, I religiously read every post and feel like I get something out of each and every one. Many of the topics that come up on here (other than the dreaded beam thankfully) discuss materials, skills, and modifications that could be helpful to know about with the odds and ends that I need to do or will do some day. The people that make up the list really have a wealth of knowledge. Thanks, Mike Hofstetter '88 28-2 Sails Call Baltimore, MD

Mike, the following from US Sailing can be useful for guessing possible ratings. In the Chesapeake, most older hulls are at the high end of the numbers. For example, CAL 25s are now at 231, although very few of us race PHRF. http://offshore.ussailing.org/Assets/Offshore/PHRF/High+Low+Mean+PHRF+Handicaps.pdf Might need a copy-paste to look at this, but is is also on the US Sailing PHRF web site. There are lots of errors in this listing. You may note that some of the information is in miles, some in nautical miles. In other words, it is useless. I have talked to them and they point out that these numbers should never be used and it says as much in the header. They are almost never updated with the exception of the header that says they are updated several times a year. They just change the header date as far as I can tell. My boat, a Lapworth-36, shows a rating of 126. Actual ratings of L-36s around the country run from 150 to 218. While there are lots of people in our local beer can race group that would like to see me have a rating of 126, I don't think any L-36 every had that rating. They told me it would be corrected on the next update. That was a year ago. Just so you know. Thanks for the followup and info on PHRF guys. After looking at the numbers, and reading Allen's followup post, it seems that this is only helpful as a looooose guideline for what ratings may (or may not) be here. I compared some of these numbers to some of the numbers on our local club's website for the boats that I know and some of them are pretty close and some of them are way out there like Allen's. It seems that if you don't have a certificate the local group assigns a number to you. It will be interesting to see if this is how they get that number. Hi Michael. Your local PHRF committee will assign you a rating after you have answered questions regarding sail area ,displacement hull dimensions. engine etc. If you have a class, unmodified boat a base rating will be assigned. If not a decision will be made by the committee. On S F Bay this is done in the YRA office in Ft. Mason. You can check out the sfbayyra website and norcalphrf web for lots of information. It may not be the same where you are but it may answer some questions about how ratings are determined My Best, Mike From: Michael Hofstetter <mk… [at] yahoo.com> To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Thu, July 8, 2010 6:17:47 AM Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] CAL 28-2 (Allen and Charlie) Thanks for the followup and info on PHRF guys. Greg, I have the manual that came with the boat. If you need any info let me know and I will get it to you. My boat was /is in good condition. I bought the boat in Charleston, SC and had some work done there and the motored up the Intra coastal. I made to Cape May,NJ and had some health problems. I had to hire a Capt. to bring it the rest of the way to Stratford, CT. I have one project to do, an AC/Heater was installed that prevented me from getting to the water heater to winterize it so I removed the AC/Heater ( Its for sale ). During the AC installation they removed the ice box. My project is to reinstall an Ice box. Let me know if I can be of any help to you. Most of the shift/throttle cables are standard Morse cables. You should be able to see the length (in inches) stamped into the shield a few inches back from one end. They should be available at any boat parts store, especially if the store supports power or work boats. John B. There is nothing in the manuals about the engine stop cable. You should be able replace from WM or Defender if you can get the length from the old one either from markings on the cable or by pulling it out and measuring the length. I put a string on cables when I pull them out to make sure I have trail when putting the new one in. Does anyone on the list race a 28-2 with a Spinnaker? Having raced my 227 for decades without ever rounding up or having a more spectacular Chinese gybe I also crew on a 28-2 and it has some of the most exciting tendencies while on a run. I am wondering if this is inherent with this boat or should we be doing something to correct the problem. John B Cal 227 #650 Gotcha Again
