I just visited Cal Boats on Wikipedia and was distressed to see so few entries on each Cal Boat design. It is easy to do. There isn't even an entry for the Cal 40! Could one of you experts please step up to the plate before your expertise is lost to the ages? The world will thank you! Check out this sorry page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_40 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_40 All others need to be updated, too! Leave your maek on the sailing world! Please. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_Yachts#Models https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_Yachts#Models

Thanks for posting. I will be posting to Wikipedia about Cal Boats I have had and have, like " Satori" my Cal Cruising 46 that we bought from Jack Jensen's estate in 1982, Yes, that's correct I've had the same boat 37 years. I bought my first Cal in 1970, "Toro" and won the Nationals in 1973. I recently celebrated my 81'st birthday, Am I the oldest Cal Boater? I have been a Cal Boater 49 years, I must sadly announce that my Cal 46 is for sale due to health challenges. She is at my dock on Bayou Chico, Pensacola, Florida undergoing some minor cosmetic improvements. After all she was launched in November 1967, only 52 years ago, but is still IMHO the best cruising sailboat ever built. My wife and I lived aboard and cruised from 1988 to 2002. It was better than we had ever dreamed. I turned 81 on March 19. I visited your boat when you were in Annapolis some years back and can attest that it is a great design. I also intend to sell my Cal 31 that I have had for 19 years because the work required to keep it looking good is getting to be too much for me and I don’t want to continue to pay people to do it. Hi, All. Doing a GOOD Wikipedia article is quit an undertaking. Take a look at sailboatdata.com for a much more complete treatment of Cals. By the way, Tom Vandiver mentioned a Cal National Championship. That was in a Cal 25 (proud to say). Might have been 1972, Tom. Why bother with wikipedia, to try to condense everything we know and have to share here on the List, when even now and then something new pops up? The wiki site can't discern when someone thinks they have all the answers doesn't even know whether or not their own boat has keel bolts, or a type of beam. Who has the time or inclination to correct the misinformation? And who besides us really cares what wiki would have to say about our boats? Why waste Tom's time when it is all here? I vote no. Just remember the data will only be there as long as wikipedia exists. Too bad there isn't a hard cover book. I love books. Have you visited this site? http://pages.sssnet.com/go2erie/calhome.htm Leslie Newman Former CAL 33-2 owner. Loved my CAL, just moved up to a larger boat. As the owner of two interesting old boats, including my cool Cal 20, I think it's important to have a readily-accessible information source. When I'm doing an online search, I'll usually pick the Wikipedia entry first because it's usually helpful and succinct. Yeah, you can often find more details elsewhere, but that may require lots of digging. For a quick summary, Wikipedia is a great choice. Now let's imagine that somebody (somebody young, perhaps) has heard about a Cal 40 that's available, and wants to know more about it. A Wikipedia entry could be their way of learning that this vessel is a classic, a symbol of a new way of thinking about offshore boat design, etc. Speaking of symbols, a Wikipedia entry symbolizes the importance of a subject. Seems to me that the Cal 40 was a significant enough breakthrough design that it deserves a good summary. Chris Campbell Cal 20 #1220, /Martha C/

Are big Cals like the 40 and 34 squirrely at the helm like the Cal 25 I last sailed, or, the Catalina 27? If you are not very very careful throwing in a tack, the boat will 'over-turn' (not capsize) and want to rip the tiller out of your hand, and radically turn on a dime if you are even going at a slow speed. Yuck. I love me Cal 24-1 with mellow handling.Considering purchasing a Cal 34-III some day, of a Cal 3-34, or a Cal 34-3. I wonder if they shortened the boom so much in part to reduce weather helm? My new Cal 24-1 #61 has more weather helm than my old (but newer..ha ha) Cal 24-1 #71 because it's P.O. installed a full roach main. (why is it called "roach". I never saw cockroaches on it?) But, damn, does it go faster...whoooooshh..just like that!! It likes to run down and crush anything under 30'..including some Olympic class Solings that aren't sailed by the best in our fleet. Woohooo, or as I like to put it, Wooowhooo!! Jerry of Shpritz (4-sale) and "Grande Finale"...formerly Steve Cole's "Zest". Call me COMMODORE VANDERBILT! Me has two boats, making it a "fleet". Ouch. 2 slips at $343 a month, and they are only 22' long. At least me diver gave me a quantity discount this month and charged me $40 for two boats instead of $25 each. He is 'Steve' of Hullworkz. Good work and reliable, unlike the other divers I've had. It pays to bring your boat into a clean water marina, like King Harbor, put on a Speedo and swim googles, and check your diver's handiwork. You might find out he's only been cleaning your water line and not the rest of the hull!! BTW I adopted the middle name for a year in 5th grade after a certain Sgt. Bilko episode, where he meets a bum who asks for five cents for a cup of coffee, and it turns out his name is "Hilton". You can imagine what happens after that. Try to find it on YouTube. Hilarious!.
