Rear seal oil leak

Hello Cal Listers: The Universal Atomic diesel in our '81 CAL35 has developed an oil leak at the back end. Friendly advice I've gotten suggest it is pointless to replace the seal without checking the crank bearings. Any advise? Dan Dunmire Stony Brook, NY Cal 35 Harmony
