Timm, you still alive? We hadn't 'hoyd' frum you. I was afraid your work cleaning up those radioactive Plutonium bomb building sites at Hanford had reduced you to a cancerous purple pulsating blob. Or maybe you'd unearthed a giant carnivorous reptile brought back to life by radioactivity you were trying to bury, like in the movie "Monster From 20,000 Fathoms" that terrorized my early childhood...and it had swallowed you whole like in the scene where the monster strolls up a Manhattan boulevard and gobbles up a policeman who's firing at it with an ineffectual service revolver. Jerry,Not to laugh but I worked at missile sites in the early sixties. They gave us a dosemiter to carry, which they never checked. What concerns me more is my exposure to trichloroethylene, which we used for cleaning everything. That stuff will take the oil out of your skin. We used it on a daily basis. Now banned. We used it by the drum!David On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, 10:45:02 PM CDT, Gerald Sobel so… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: Timm, you still alive? David, why would anyone expect them to check those radiation dosemeters?. If they really cared about sending us into 'harms way', they wouldn't have sent us into harm's way to begin with! But yes, it did offer us nervous young 'kids' a certain sense of Big Brotherly consolation, I guess. Isn't that trichloroethylene the 'good stuff' for removing old varnish, the stuff I used to refinish the woodwork inside Shpritz, applying, washing off, and re applying and washing off at least four times for it to work?. I recall the label says: "Be sure to use in enclosed areas with poor air circulation or access tp fresh air for best results. Use of gas mask voids warranty"..right? Commodore Vanderbilt II, 'cause I have a fleet of two little Cals. And 'cause I adopted Vanderbilt as my middle name on advice of Sgt. Bilko's mooching bum friend in one of his get rich quick episodes. Dosimeters and trichlor aside, Hi, Timm! How you been? Now that greetings are covered, I was also a heavy trichloroethane user in the 60s and 70s when I worked for a little electronics prototyping shop. We certainly had our oil drum full of the stuff in the back room. Primary function was cleaning flux off small PC boards prior to conformal coating. We would soak the boards in the trichlor and then hand scrub with a flux brush prior to conformal coating. Ahhh, the smell. Masks? Well, sometimes. Gloves? Well, sometimes. This did not kill my hands and did not prevent me from playing bass in rock bands for a goodly number of years. Was never quite sure of the difference between trichloroethane and trichloroethylene. Those of us of a certain age will remember antique devices known as "brake drums." When you worked on the brakes, the drums usually had a collection of dust from the brake shoes--which were asbestos-laden. The dust was annoying. Shops with compressors would blow it out with an air nozzle--pssssstt--and dust would fly everywhere (including into our lungs). Those of us without compressors would just blow it out like a candle--whoosh--and the dust would fly and we'd inhale again, taking in all that nice dust. Then I burned all the white paint off a 1920 two-story house with an electric heat device. Heat, scrape, heat, scrape, blow out little fire, heat scrape, wipe sweat from eyes with dusty hand.... And what do you suppose old paint contains? Yeah, lead, and it vaporizes at the temps I was applying, and the dust on my hands and in the air was lead-laden. And I still use methylene chloride paint remover. Duh. Maybe it's from frying my brain with lead. Chris Campbell
