Perkin 4-107 surges
Michael Robinson2019-09-07 19:05 UTC
Running at 1500 RPM the engine will surge 500 to 1000 RPM after 10 - 15 min run time. The the frequency increses to 1 - 2 minutes and the surge increases to 1000- 2000 RPM. Boat speed increases when this occurs. The RPM rackets up and will not throttle down. It remains at the higher RPM when shifted to neutral. I then shut engine down and after 5 minutes restart to normal idle RPM, about 500. Then the surge build up begins again. Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks

First thing I think would be to change all fuel filters, make sure you don't have any air leaks in the fuel system and bleed it all the way through. Sounds fuel delivery-ish to me.

When have you had your injectors and high pressure pump tested & calibrated?
Mr. Perkins suggests each 1,000 hours.
Next time you are in Pensacola, FL bring the injectors over to my shop and I will test them while you watch.
I do not have the $20,000 machine for testing/calibrating high pressure pumps. We send our to Atmore Fuel Injection in Atmore, AL. If you remove your pump, be sure to index it. Contact me if you want their address.
There are several wear points in the pump that could cause surging.
