I am a Cal 3-34 owner and a web developer. I was thinking we could turn this group into a forum. There may be a way to download all the content from this group to the forum as an archive at least. Any interest?

I also have a cal 34 mkIII. I have all kinds of trouble accessing this

Hi, All. I became the moderator for the Cal Group some years ago to fill a vacuum, and not out of any particular skill. I am not a web site facile type. (However, I can make transistors tap dance.)
I do know that many years ago (close to 20?) the Cal Group was on Sailnet. The bulk of the folks switched over to Yahoo when Sailnet wanted to start charging $$ for membership. I believe Sailnet is back to free again.

Charlie, it would be good to download the yahoo group database for archives.. do you see a way to do that?

I'd second the idea of moving the group forward into a forum. The biggest
advantage of forums that I see would be-
(a) ability to spread out discussions into threads on individual topics
(i.e. maintenance, engines, racing, cruising, electronics, etc) which may
encourage members to contribute more in the areas they are most interested
in,
(b) ease of access - you'd instantly have visibility to all the latest
topics of interest as soon as you click on the main forum page, with quick
and easy access to past topics
(c) help serve as a better long term repository for preserving knowledge.
It could provide the ability to do a universal search at any time for
topics of interest, making it easier to build on past knowledge.
While Facebook serves as an amusing source for social postings and
near-real time conversations, I really don't find it all that useful for
knowledge sharing. Anything posted is very linear and quickly gets buried
in one's feed of whatever formula facebook uses to determine is "relevant"
to you.
As an example of a style of forum page that I happen to like myself (not
sailing related, though), here's one which I like due to it's simplicity
and ease of access. The home page shows a top level of all the latest
topics of interest which are all one click away, and by clicking on the
"Forums" link you have quick access to all the current and past discussions
broken down by category. http://maulepilots.org/

That’s funny. Small world. My friend Christine Kerner owns the maulepilots forum. I’ve helped her with it in the past. Ages ago, I learned to fly in a Maule and used to broker them with Jeremy Ainsworth. Maybe you know them?
I agree with your points. I’d just need access to the yahoo group database or a download of it to transfer the info. It would be great to have all this info searchable and in one main place.

I'm a Cal 2-27 owner of three years and learn constantly from the body of
knowledge this group holds,..hope we can preserve this somehow. Serves
like a lighthouse, keeping us from stupid mistakes.

Please, let's not move to Facebook. I avoid that system on grounds that
it seems creepy.
Most of us probably have a bunch of other odd interests. I'm on a forum
dealing with old console radio/phonos--the big old Magnavox, Zenith, or
RCA console that used to grace living rooms. It is by far the easiest to
access and use of any I've encountered. Posting photos is a click
away--no resizing or other manipulations required. Here's a link:

I know nothing about how it's hosted or anything else but I do know that
it's a breeze to use.

Several forums I frequent have a “general discussion” section that often receives the most post. One calls this the “Lounge” maybe you could have a “Clubhouse” or “Dock talk” so we can talk or brag about these great sailing boats.
MABE a “classified sections for parts, sails or WTB / WTS items.

That;s great to see! Thank you for your help in this. I'd personally love
to see albums set up for the various models of Cals that we own, as I'm
interested in salon configuration running rigging modifications, stuff like
that so a resource album with photos would be terrific.
