Hi, Fiver. Two different boats. There are both a Hunt CAL 28 and a
Hunt CAL 9.2. The 9.2 is a metric (became all the rage to measure that
way), so she is a skosh over 30 feet. With that said, I have no idea
what the ballast is. Timmo will nail this one.
Cheers

Mike, not sure of your question ? ? Of course the 9.2 is a Cal, it was designed by Ron Holland. I owned a Cal 9.2 from 2003 until 2015 and will gladly share any info you would like on the boat.

Hello! My name is Mike and I own one (Adios) but, is it really a CAL ? I met Don, owner of Freewind, and wonder if he or any other 9.2 owners/former owners are still around.

As I recall, the very distinguished (extinguished?) Mr. Timm Lessley, our very own Cap’n dEmO, had a CAL 9.2.

Sorry, I didn't intend to overlook the CAL 9.2 (and CAL 9.2R!) but Charlie had only referred to the Lapworth and Hunt-Associates Designs, so I left out the one Ron Holland Designed CAL (a re-badged JEANEAU product) from my answer.
However, if the CAL 9.2 was a CAL, I'll need to eat my hat! (<GRIN!> Does anyone else remember that Advertising slogan? But a CAL she was! I wonder how many CAL enthusiasts had a "hat sandwich" when that boat was introduced <GRIN!>?

Charlie,
The CR Hunt Associates Designed CALs started to appear after Bangor-Punta more or less merged CAL Boats with O'DAY, around 1980-82. At that time the Costa Mesa, CA and Marlboro, NJ plants were apparently closed and production moved to Florida (Tampa?), the Business Offices for CAL were soon moved to Fall River, MA into the O'DAY Production Facility there. A few years later it seems that most production also moved to Fall River. I believe the first Hunt-Associates-Desgned CAL was the "CAL 24", aka "CAL 24-2" introduced in 1983, and the last Lapworth-Designed CAL, the CAL 27-III was introduced in 1983 as well.. The Lapworth CALs (other than the 27-III) seem to have been phased out within the next couple years, and the new CRH-Designed CAL 22, CAL 28, and CAL 33 (aka: CAL 33-2) were introduced starting in 1985. The Hunt-Designed CAL 39 followed in 1987, however, by then CAL-O'DAY was slipping away as Bangor-Punta Marine sold the company to Lear-Siegler around late 1984, and Lear-Siegler sold the company to a group of investors around 1987-88. CAL-O'DAY fell into bankruptcy in May 1989 after struggling for the past year or more, the assets were sold at auction soon after with some of the production being bought by PEARSON YACHTS in nearby Portsmouth, RI. I don't think PEARSON actually built any CALS, except they did "tweak" the CAL 28-2 design to create the O'DAY 290 (basically added a swim platform/sugar-scoop to the transom increasing LOA slightly. PEARSON folded in February 1991, it is rumored that the CAL molds were purchased by a Group called "Little Compton Yachts" but only one CAL is known to have been built by them ,a single (updated) CAL 33 around 1996..
Hope this info helps...

Hi, All. I’ve attached a file of different CAL models and variants and mutations built through 1984. Not sure if the file will make it.
For a while, CALs were built on both coasts. You could look at the hull number and see where your boat was built.
At some point, Jensen was gone and Bangor Punta was doing the production.
At some point Bill Lapworth retired, and the CALs were designed by Raymond Hunt.

I appreciate everyone's input.
I believe it would be nice to have specific model categories so that people can post photos of their configurations. For instance, the layout is very different in my 3-34 from a 2-34. Other categories can handle everything else. If I left a model out or typed it incorrectly, please let me know. These things can be changed if they don't work out.
If the site becomes too busy for my server, I will have to upgrade. I put a link on the site for donations under "Suggestions". Its not that expensive. I have spent around $100 so far including the SSL certificate (so the site is secure).
I've already requested the download from Yahoo. Hopefully, it will come through.
Please sign up on the website and share feedback and suggestions under "Suggestions" on the forum. There may be usability issues. I have only tested it myself, so please help me test it.
Thanks! I look forward to having an excellent forum with great Cal info and photos.

A few points. 1) there is overlap between models for most topics, engines, racing, general interest that having separate tabs for cal-20 and cal-22 seems like the wrong way to go. Look at the tabs on the Sailing Anarchy for some guidance. Maintenance, Gear, Racing. I would think for this group, just a few categories or maybe only one would be the right choice. If you do make everything by model number, I am out of here for obvious reasons.. I am thinking a very minimum number of topics and then threads within each topic would be best. I ran a forum on L-36..com for a few years but it didn't take off. PHP 7 upgrade killed it.
2) I read that getting the old data off the Yahoo server is so difficult it seems impossible unless you requires a dump of the entire site. That apparently takes 30 days for the request so you might want to get on that.. Otherwise you have to download things one item at a time, which is basically impossible.
3) You need to put up something to stop spammers.. If they get through, they can put up hundreds of messages at once and they all have to be deleted one at a time. I used the question "What color is a fire truck if it isn't yellow?" I found that if you say what is 2 + 2 the bot will answer 4. And any question with the answer in it doesn't work. Those hard to read things where you have to type something after trying to read it don't work either. Right now I use "What color is yellow snow if it isn't white?" and have yet to have anybody get through it.

Mary, thank you so much. A few notes based on the mail I’ve been reading and other observations.
We have over 1,000 members as I recall. Is size a problem?
I’m looking at how to do a dump of what we have on Yahoo. Might you be able to take this on if I have trouble?
Members seem divided on whether we want functional categories (e.g., engines, hull maintenance) or boat model based categories (e.g., Cal 20, Cal 25, Cal 40). Would a cross matrix be possible (e.g., engine – Cal 40)?
For proper terminology is one of our boats a CAL 20 or a Cal 20? A CAL 33, or a Cal 33?
The members are not divided in their thanks for your efforts.

Please, let's not move to Facebook. I avoid that system on grounds that it seems creepy.
Most of us probably have a bunch of other odd interests.. I'm on a forum dealing with old console radio/phonos--the big old Magnavox, Zenith, or RCA console that used to grace living rooms. It is by far the easiest to access and use of any I've encountered. Posting photos is a click away--no resizing or other manipulations required. Here's a link:

I know nothing about how it's hosted or anything else but I do know that it's a breeze to use.
